CROSSING OVER
No. This isn't a post about where we go when we die but rather, where an author's voice can go if they cross over the genre lines. I have heard it said many times that a writer should find the genre that they are best in and stick with it. I have never been much for taking the advice of 'them' so, I am going against what 'they' have said and ‘crossing over' the genre lines. Here are some wonderful examples of well known authors who are ‘crossing over' as well. I will start with the ladies;
Meg Cabot is a prominent writer in multiple genres, reaching into chick lit, mystery, romance and even sci-fi. Nora Roberts is a romance and fantasy author who also writes chilling suspense under the pen name, J.D. Robb. And let's not forget the prolific Anne Rice, who's genres include horror, erotica, Christian fiction, romance and even fantasy. As for the men, there are many who have crossed over, but some of the more famous ones are James Rollins, Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker and of course, James Patterson. Now I pose the question: Does this mean that every author was meant for 'crossing over'? In my opinion, No.
My example is Stephanie Meyer. I will probably catch a lot of flack for writing this one but I have to say it...The Host was, for me, a prime example of the author's voice being drowned out by the genre and just not quite flowing as it should. Though I have read Meyer's Twilight Series and must confess to liking it very much, I must also say that I believe that the YA genre is the place for Meyer and that her attempt at ‘crossing over' failed for me as a reader.
In short, I think we get too hung up on genres and limiting authors to a particular one. I truly believe that it is the author's voice that determines their niche rather than the genre itself. An author's writing style must grow and change as that writer grows and changes. If that means that I must go against what 'they' have said to write outside of the thriller genre, then so be it. And if the time comes for me to follow one of my favorite authors as they are 'crossing over', then I will gladly tag along.

A Few Words About Our Passion...
On the subject of writing, I want others to know the amount of courage it takes to not only sit down and begin the sometimes-tedious, all-consuming task of writing a novel, but to say to others: I am writing a book. Many look at you as if you have spoken to them in a language that they are unfamiliar with. Most people never stop to think that an actual person wrote that newspaper article they read this morning, or that book they read last night or last year, and they certainly never think about a man or a woman slaving over that screenplay that just happened to turn into their favorite movie. I want everyone to imagine that person who literally put their soul and every dream they ever had into one piece of literature and be reminded of the courage and heart it took to do it. The next time you sit down to read the newspaper, or a book, or you find yourself watching a movie that moves you to your core, remember; it all started with an idea, a blank sheet of paper, and a dream. It was realized in four little words...I AM A WRITER!
